José Macedo was born in 1970 in São Paulo and first came into contact with the German language when he studied at the Goethe-Institut between1988 and1994, which awarded him a study grant in Berlin in 1993.
He graduated in Law from the Universidade de São Paulo - USP [University of São Paulo] in 1992, and he took his MA in German Language and Literature in 1997 and his PhD in Classical Literature in 2004, both at USP.
Macedo is familiar with German, Hebrew, Yiddish, Latin, Sanskrit, Spanish, French, English, Italian, Russian, Catalan, and Greek, though he only translates from English, French, Spanish, and German.
His areas of research at USP are related to Linguistics, Language studies and the Arts, and particularly to languages, Classical Literature, Comparative Literature, and Literary Theory.
